Trump Accuses Ex-FBI Director James Comey of Calling for His Assassination in Shocking ‘86 47’ Post

By Ethan DC | U.S. Politics | May 19, 2025

Former President Donald Trump is sounding the alarm after a cryptic social media post by ex-FBI Director James Comey went viral—one that Trump claims was a veiled call for his assassination.

The post in question? Just two numbers: “86 47”.

While the message might seem ambiguous to the average user, Trump is calling it a dangerous coded message—and he's not holding back.

Trump’s Reaction: “It’s a Death Threat”

In a fiery Truth Social post, Trump blasted Comey for what he called “an unhinged and evil statement.” Trump, who served as the 45th president, interpreted “86 47” as a death threat—suggesting the phrase means “eliminate the 47th president.” Trump is currently campaigning to become the 47th president in 2024.

“James Comey should be arrested immediately for his disgusting post. ‘86 47’ is nothing short of a public call to assassinate me,” Trump wrote. “This is beyond politics—it’s dangerous.”

The phrase "86" is commonly used as slang for getting rid of something or someone, and "47" has been widely associated with Trump’s potential return to the White House.

Comey Breaks Silence: “It’s Just a Joke”

After the backlash, Comey clarified his intent—but didn’t exactly apologize.

“It was a joke. A bad one, maybe. But a joke,” Comey told reporters. “Anyone who knows me knows I oppose Trump politically, but I would never wish harm on anyone.”

Critics of Comey argue that as a former FBI director, he should have known the weight such a message might carry in today’s hyper-charged political climate.

Political Fallout: Free Speech or Incitement?

The internet quickly split into camps. Trump supporters view the post as proof of the deep state’s hostility, while others defended Comey’s right to free speech—even poor attempts at humor.

Conservative commentators, including Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens, called the post “disgusting” and “un-American,” with many demanding an FBI investigation.

Meanwhile, some on the left accused Trump of exploiting the post for political gain, stirring up his base just as the 2024 election season heats up.

What Does “86” Really Mean?

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, “86” is American slang meaning to “refuse service” or “eliminate.” It’s commonly used in restaurants but has evolved into broader slang for removing or canceling someone or something.

When paired with “47,” the interpretation becomes more ominous—especially in the high-stakes world of presidential politics.

Where Things Stand Now

So far, no legal action has been taken against Comey, and no charges have been filed. However, Trump’s campaign is reportedly reviewing options and has urged law enforcement to “treat the matter seriously.”

As of this writing, Comey has not deleted the post.
